THE A220: A DIFFERENT ORIGIN INSIDE THE AIRBUS PORTFOLIO
The A220 began as Bombardier's C Series, not an Airbus-designed reduction of the A320. The programme launched in 2008; the CS100 first flew in 2013 and entered service with SWISS in 2016. Airbus became the majority partner on 1 July 2018. The A220 name consequently describes a later programme identity rather than its original design starting date. [220, Programme main dates]
An aircraft can share a manufacturer portfolio without sharing the A320 flight deck, engine family or procedures. The A220 belongs in the commercial-aircraft history, but does not extend the operating inventory of a Fenix ceo A319/A320/A321. Product ownership and technical commonality need separate family trees.
