VECTORS, DIRECT TO AND HOLDING

Contents

During vectors, fly the cleared heading and altitude while monitoring position, raw approach information and remaining distance. The original arrival line may no longer describe the immediate path. Keep the intercept and energy picture current as each clearance changes the geometry. [21, PDF pp. 149-158]

Before inserting a DIRECT TO, confirm the intended fix and clearance and inspect the proposed turn. Afterwards, verify the new active leg, sequencing and aircraft response. A familiar waypoint name is not enough to establish that the selected point and turn fit the aircraft's current position. [66, PDF pp. 113-120] [21, PDF pp. 141-146]

For a hold, review the fix, inbound course, turn direction, speed, altitude and intended exit against the clearance and chart. Continue fuel, weather and approach planning while holding. The extra time is useful only if the resulting approach or diversion plan remains workable when the aircraft leaves the pattern. [21, PDF pp. 147-148]
