ENDING PRODUCTION DID NOT END A380 OPERATION
InFebruary 2019, Airbus announced that a reduced Emirates orderbook and insufficient remaining demand meant A380 deliveries would cease in 2021. This is a documented commercial explanation. It is more precise than declaring that the aircraft failed simply because it was large, or assuming that passenger popularity must guarantee a sustainable production line. [34, Orderbook adjustment and delivery decision]
The final delivery occurred on 16 December 2021, when Emirates received its 123rd A380; Airbus identified it as the 251st delivered overall. Closing a production line did not withdraw the aircraft from airline fleets. Support, maintenance, modification and continued operation remain separate activities with their own economics and timescales. [35, Final delivery and continuing support]
The distinction also helps with software histories. Ending development of a version, removing a product from sale and ending support are different events. A current simulator can represent an aircraft whose production has ended. Its usefulness depends on the aircraft standard and software build being reproduced, rather than whether another example is still coming off an assembly line.
