A PROFESSIONAL REHEARSAL PLAN

Contents

First rehearse the reference flight with a stable aircraft configuration and no injected failure. Complete the dispatch-to-MCDU comparison, mass reconciliation and route review. At each transition, connect the request with the indication that confirms its result. A successful run is one whose system state and flight path you can explain, rather than one whose controls happened to end in familiar positions. [23, Normal procedures; preparation through parking]

Next isolate programming changes: a new departure, a revised arrival, a discontinuity, a constraint, a direct-to, a hold and a secondary-plan diversion. Use the appropriate advanced chapter for each exercise. Read the resulting lateral and vertical path, performance fields and mode indications. Repeating one small branch with a clear purpose usually reveals more than introducing several simultaneous surprises. [66, Lateral/vertical flight-plan management and PERF phases]

Then compare the other airframe, engine and wingtip configurations using their own applicable data. Finally introduce a supported failure with a recorded starting state and a clear learning question. Follow the current installed procedure, assess consequences and debrief the causal chain. The failure is an opportunity to examine the model and the decision process, not a reason to improvise a remembered checklist from another Airbus type. [86, Failure selection, activation and aircraft-state management]
