THE FOUNDERS: A PRODUCT AND A PRODUCTION SYSTEM

Contents

Roger Beteille helped shape both the A300B and the industrial arrangement behind it. Airbus credits him and production director Felix Kracht with establishing the workshare between the partners. The fuselage was conceived around useful airline capacity, including standard containers beside one another below the cabin. That is a more revealing engineering story than simply calling the A300 a large aircraft: it had to make sense to customers paying for every journey. [8, A300B design and industrial workshare]

Beteille also argued for a family of aircraft. Customers buying from an unfamiliar manufacturer needed confidence that support and future products would continue. The subsequent A310 and A320 therefore mattered to the credibility of the A300 as well as to their own customers. This was industrial risk management expressed through aeroplanes, spares, training and long-term airline relationships. [8, Aircraft-family strategy]

Bernard Ziegler represents another part of the story: flight testing, engineering and the introduction of digital fly-by-wire with sidesticks on the A320. Airbus records that he joined as chief test pilot in 1972 and later led engineering. His contribution concerned the designed relationship between pilot input, computer logic and aircraft response, a subject central to the handling chapters later in this companion.
