THE INDUSTRIAL AIRCRAFT BEHIND THE PASSENGER AIRCRAFT

Contents

Distributed production depends on moving large assemblies between sites. The BelugaXL entered operational service in January 2020 after its first operational flight on 9 January. Based on the A330-200 Freighter, it increased component-transport capacity and could carry two A350 wings where the BelugaST carried one. It was an industrial enabler as well as a visually distinctive freighter. [43, Entry into service and industrial role]

The earlier BelugaST was derived from the A300-600. Its story continued after replacement in the internal transport role: in January 2026 Airbus announced plans to preserve one aircraft at Broughton for education. Replacement in service, external use, preservation and retirement are different outcomes, rather than interchangeable descriptions of a final-flight headline. [44, Broughton preservation announcement]

Industrial commonality and cockpit commonality are different ideas. Reusing a donor airframe can simplify development while major changes are made to fuselage, loading system, tail or cockpit position. Resemblance and difference both belong in the description. The same reasoning helps distinguish an aircraft variant, a simulator expansion and an airline equipment option.
