SPACE: THE COMPANY STORY EXTENDS BEYOND THE ATMOSPHERE
European space transport developed through a partnership of agencies and industry. ESA records Ariane 1's first launch on 24 December 1979 from Kourou. The programme belongs to that wider collaboration rather than to a single manufacturer. A corporate family tree can show how contractors became part of Airbus; it does not mean Airbus alone conceived, financed or operated every associated mission. [206, First Ariane 1 launch and European cooperation]
Gaia offers a later example. Airbus Defence and Space designed and built the observatory for ESA; it was launched in 2013 to map the positions and motions of stars. The spacecraft image is an artist's representation, not a photograph taken alongside it in space. From airliners to helicopters, transports and scientific spacecraft, the company's history is the accumulation of different programmes and skills. Their connections are industrial and human; their operating manuals remain separate. [207, Designed and built for ESA; 2013 launch; astrometric mission]
