READ WEATHER INFORMATION WITHOUT OVERREADING THE RADAR

Contents

Build the weather assessment from reports, forecasts, observed conditions and the aircraft's available indications. The real-aircraft radar source describes precipitation detection, with returns affected by droplet characteristics, tilt, range and gain. It explicitly distinguishes wet weather returns from clear-air turbulence that the radar cannot detect. Therefore, a weak or absent return is not a general certificate that the route is free of hazardous weather. The operational task is avoidance and reassessment, using the information that the equipment can actually provide. [21, PDF pp. 283–289] [21, PDF pp. 313–316]

Understand tilt and gain as assessment controls, rather than controls for making the picture more attractive. The manufacturer discussion explains how overscanning can underestimate a cell, and how ground returns and weather may react differently to tilt changes. Its manual-gain assessment is followed by restoration of the appropriate automatic/calibrated condition. These are real-equipment principles. Their V3 reproduction must be established independently for the installed platform. Observe what a supported current implementation actually provides and label any limitation when using the display in a training comparison. [21, PDF pp. 313–316] [132, V3 weather-display and detection verification status]

For V3, separate the weather information available from the functions whose implementation has been verified. This edition has not established a current primary implementation specification or live test covering every radar return, control, detection and inhibit condition on both platforms. Consequently it provides no rendering workaround or promise of real-equipment fidelity. Preserve the actual build, platform, weather source, display configuration and observed result when a weather-display question arises. Use current V3 documentation for any supported test or repair, and keep uncertainty about the display separate from the operational decision to avoid hazardous weather. [132, V3 weather radar: unresolved implementation and live-test scope] [21, PDF pp. 313–316]

Predictive and reactive windshear have different informational roles in the aircraft reference: prediction supports avoidance ahead, while reactive indications concern an encounter and its energy consequences. The FCTM distinguishes the resulting procedures and configuration considerations. This research has not verified the full V3 predictive-windshear detection, alert and inhibit envelope on either simulator platform. A PWS switch or annunciator does not establish that every physical function is reproduced. The coverage matrix records the real-aircraft principle separately from the unverified implementation, without claiming either complete simulation or complete absence. [21, PDF pp. 285–289] [132, V3 PWS detection/envelope verification status]

For a weather exercise, define the information available and the decision to be practised before introducing the scenario. A useful case can test delaying an approach, accepting a more suitable runway or choosing a diversion without requiring an unverified radar feature. If testing an aircraft warning, identify the supported failure or environmental trigger and record the actual response. Report the installed build, platform, weather source and display configuration with the outcome. Separate a weather-avoidance decision from a test of the simulator's rendering or detection model.
