AUTOLAND, NON-ILS AND VISUAL APPROACHES
An autopilot tracking an ILS does not by itself establish an autoland setup. Confirm aircraft capability, system status, runway/ILS suitability, configuration and applicable limits. Prepare the mode sequence and takeover or go-around plan before the exercise and verify the capability actually annunciated. [21, PDF pp. 177-183]
For a non-ILS approach, choose the managed final guidance or selected FPA method required by the actual procedure. A visual approach also needs a defined path, configuration and landing plan. Confirm the intended mode sequence, correct minima and chart references rather than carrying the ILS method across by habit. [21, PDF pp. 163-168] [21, PDF pp. 173-176]
Use a familiar destination when comparing these methods. That leaves more attention for the changed guidance, monitoring and decision points. Brief the specific exercise and its expected indications; changing approach method should be a deliberate part of the plan.
