AFTER LANDING AND TAXI TO THE STAND

Contents

Once fully clear of the runway, complete the after-landing flow while retaining control of the taxi. It includes the required light and transponder changes, ground-spoiler disarming/retraction, flap retraction when conditions permit, and APU preparation if we will need it at the stand. Review brake temperatures and the cleared taxi route too. Use the conditions and qualifications in the normal procedure rather than turning the flow into an automatic movement of every lever. The landing configuration had one purpose; the taxi and stand configuration have another. Confirm each result as we bring the aircraft into that next state. [63, PDF pp. 2-4]

Taxi with the same attention we used at Frankfurt: chart and clearance understood, speed controlled, outside view active. If the route changes and the picture becomes unclear, stop somewhere suitable to establish the next part. At the stand, identify the correct stopping position and the intended brake and chock arrangement. The aircraft must be secured before shutdown and the arrival of ground services are allowed to change the situation around it. Confirm the arrangement that actually exists. Selecting a parking-brake handle is an input; the aircraft remaining safely in its intended position is the result we need. [63, PDF pp. 5-6,11-15]

This last taxi is an easy place for attention to drift towards the completed landing. Keep it with the aircraft until the movement and ground handover are finished. Brakes and engines may be hot, other aircraft are still moving, and ground personnel will be approaching the stand. A normal arrival leaves those ordinary tasks to complete. In the simulator, it is also a useful final exercise in recognising the aircraft's geometry and planning a controlled stop. Once the stand is reached and the aircraft is secure, there will be time to look at the touchdown again and decide what to practise on the next flight.

IN PRACTICE: Taxi in with the same care used for taxi out

Before you begin: The whole aircraft is clear of the landing runway and the taxi clearance to the stand is understood.

1. Put the taxi route ahead of the cleanup

Action. Locate the cleared taxiways and parking position on the airport chart. Read back any crossing instruction and identify the next stopping point before starting the after-landing flow.

Check. Taxi navigation remains the primary task and there is no unexamined runway crossing in the route. [14, PDF pp. 1159-1160] [13, PDF pp. 201-202]

2. Remove the landing configuration

Action. For the normal uncontaminated case, select FLAPS 0, disarm the ground spoilers and check the actual positions. After an icing approach or exposure to snow/slush, retain the high-lift configuration until the ground check required by the normal procedure; account for any specified hot-weather configuration.

Check. The aircraft reaches the intended taxi configuration without retracting obstructed surfaces. The actual configuration, rather than a routine lever movement, is the check result. [14, PDF pp. 1159-1160]

3. Set the ground-facing systems

Action. Set TCAS to STBY, the weather radar OFF/STBY and predictive windshear OFF in the normal after-landing flow. Set the exterior lights for taxi and keep the transponder arrangement appropriate to the ground operation.

Check. The aircraft presents the ground lighting and equipment state required for taxi without losing attention to traffic and clearance. [14, PDF pp. 1159-1160]

4. Watch the brakes and allow engine cooling

Action. Monitor brake temperatures and the actual taxi speed. Allow the normal engine idle-cooling period before shutdown; the time spent taxiing at idle contributes to that period.

Check. The stand arrival does not force an immediate shutdown after high thrust or ignore a hot-brake condition. [13, PDF pp. 201-202] [14, PDF pp. 1161-1165]

5. Prepare the stand power source

Action. If APU power or air will be needed, start it early enough to reach AVAIL before shutdown. If using external power, know when the ground connection can actually be made.

Check. A replacement supply can be established at the stand instead of being discovered after the engines have been switched off. [14, PDF pp. 1161-1165] [14, PDF p. 1161]

6. Approach the stand slowly and finish the taxi

Action. Follow the stand guidance or marshaller to the correct stop position. Keep the aircraft under control until it is stopped and secured.

Check. The aircraft is parked at the assigned position with the final taxi manoeuvre complete. [14, PDF pp. 1161-1165] [13, PDF pp. 201-202]

Complete when: The aircraft is at the stand, the cooling/servicing picture is known and the replacement power source is ready or being connected.
